Dr. Ian Burke

Dr. Ian Burke is a weed scientist, researcher and educator who brings more than two decades of experience in agricultural research, teaching and Extension to his role as head of the Department of Crop and Soil Sciences at North Carolina State University. A two-time NC State graduate, Burke earned his master’s and doctoral degrees in weed science from NC State after receiving a bachelor’s degree in biology from Old Dominion University.

Prior to returning to NC State, Burke spent nearly two decades at Washington State University, where he served as professor and R.J. Cook Endowed Chair in Wheat Research. His research focuses on weed biology and ecology, with an emphasis on developing practical, economical approaches to weed management and addressing challenges such as herbicide resistance and invasive weeds. His work has included extensive field research and collaboration with growers, industry and other researchers to translate scientific discoveries into solutions for agriculture.

In 2025, Burke received the Western Society of Weed Science’s Outstanding Weed Scientist award in recognition of his contributions to the field. He has also served in national leadership with the Weed Science Society of America, including as president-elect in 2025 and president beginning in 2026.

As department head at NC State, Burke is focused on strengthening interdisciplinary research, expanding industry partnerships and advancing precision agriculture and curriculum innovation to prepare students for the future of farming. He is passionate about connecting agricultural research with the real-world challenges faced by growers and helping ensure that innovation continues to make a meaningful impact on the farm.
